Unhappy DE enviroment won't start after installing the offical ATI drivers...

Hi to all!

I'm a complete newbie here. Just installed Mepis 6.0 RC2 to see what's it like and already having some trouble. As a Windows user - I have difficulties when loosing my desktop. Well, after installing ATI official drivers and rebooting - I lost it. My KDE Desktop won't run and won't give me any reason why. I tried entering KDM at the prompt but nothing happens. A friend of mine, who uses linux a little bit, said that it could be due to some kind of monitor recognition problem and I need to edit some conf files. Well, it's all very interesting and I could search the net for it, but I got some test papers to give in at my University and I don't have the time. So could you please help me, guys?!

I got an ATI Radeon x1600 Pro AGP and a 19" Philips Brilliance 109P4 monitor.

Thanks in advance for any help provided! Waiting responce!

check the X log file. the file is located in /var/log/ and is called Xorg.log.0 or something similar, i forget. youll need to be looking for lines that start with (EE), meaning that there is an error, so do: 'grep (EE) /var/log/Xorg.log.0', or whatever the exact filename is. post the output here
