conky/torsmo help

I've been running torsmo for a while and I'm happy with it.
I have read that it is no longer being developed, but a similar/more advanced project called conky is available as a tar file (and gentoo emerge).
Has anyone managed to get conky running with Mepis?
I get a message complaining that proc/ something is not available when compiling from the tarball. (it is though).
Any help appreciated.

I finally got it to work by installing the new 1.3 debian package.
