I've had this trouble on and off for a long time, but now it seems to be constant. I just installed Mepis7, and when I tried to do "apt-get update" using the repositories as they were installed from the installation CD. All of them wer accessed except tne one line that pertains specifically to Mepis:
deb ftp://ftp.mepis.com/mepis/ mepis-7.0 main

Is that the proper repository? are their any errors in the way it is put?

If it is right, why might it be that I can't get through to it?

Hope someone can help, because I really like Mepis - have it on two of my own machines, and trying to put it on my daughters machine.

Seems to work fine, a bit slow, but it works.
Only packages with mepis in the package name will use this address.
Test 1) install with synaptic : e.g. acroread or kde stuff, OK
Test 2) # apt-get update : The lines

May be the link was not working when you tried, just try again.
P.S.: Ignore means "already included", AFAIK

I still can'
t conect to Mepis repositories though it seems everyone else can. Heres is the series of errors that Syn aptic reports after it has properly connected to all my other repositories and tried (and tried and tried) to connect to the Mepis repositories:

ftp://ftp.mepis.com/mepis/dists/mepi...6/Packages.gz: Could not connect data socket, connection timed out

What is going on? Have I got a clsoed port? or interference from an ISP? or what????


Here's the error from synaptic: ftp://ftp.mepis.com/dists/mepis/Release.gpg: Could not connect to ftp.mepis.com:21 (72.55.146.179), connection timed out

Here's the traceroute command and results:

and here's the error from apt-get upgrade (after upgrading all the other repositories):
Could not connect to ftp.mepis.com:21 (72.55.146.179), connection timed out

If ping ftp.mepis.org I get and instant response and a short return time, and ftp.mepis.com is identified with the same number as with traceroute (above)

if I use firefox: ftp://ftp.mepis.com after a long wait I get the message that the server is taking to long to respond, and firefox has timed out.
If I change (still using firefox) and use the line http://ftp.mepis.com the url automatically turns to:
http://ftp.mepis.com/apache2-default/ and goes to a page that says simply in large type "it works"

All of this tells me that the url is there, but apt-get nor synaptic will go to it! I'm still trying to figure out why - especially since it seems to be having no trouble with debian or other urls.

This affects not only my main destop, but every computer that I have, and even if I have just finished installing Mepis

Just to add my 2 cents worth here I too am having the same issues!!

Installed Mepis and getting timeout errors on this and another Multimedia.

this is a rather bad sticking point for me as i'm trailing mepis as a new distro for me to use but if i cannot get regualar updates etc then i have to question it's viability to me.

I should have reported here that I found the answer. It's not a pleasant one, but it works just fine. The answer is that my ISP (Quest) was using a microsoft connection. I don't understand just how that all works, and they (quest) insisted that they were not blocking my connections in any way. I discovered that Quest could put me on a different plan that had nothing to do with Microsoft. After they did that, I have no more problems with connections to Mepis.

Since I understand so little about how the internet works, I can't prove mal intent on the part of Quest of Microsoft, but it sure looks suspicious.

Please confirm that you also are using MEPIS 7.

Where do you live & who is your ISP? -- As my profile shows, I'm in Houston; what it doesn't show is that I use HALNet DSL (a small local ISP run by our local computer club). I don't have these problems.

Did you try pinging the server?
Are your problems constant or intermittent?
