Can't get 1440x990 screen res

The hardware is an ECS GEFORCE 6100SM-M motherboard with an Athlon 64 X2 -5000+ processor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813135039 The monitor is an Optiquest Q19wb 1440x990 wide screen monitor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824116014 There is 1GB Crucial system memory. OS is SM 6.5 and the nVidia splash screen comes up on boot, so I assume the driver is fine. I tried the Xubuntu 7.04 64 bit live CD but the 1440x900 isn't recognized either.

No matter what I do to xorg.conf, I cannot get it to allow me to get to 1440x990 sr. I added some modlines from my old Xubuntu system which worked for that but I couldn't get to a graphical login in SM6.5, I added a modline generated from gtf ( http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.p..._the_frequency ) and then also Option "UseEdidFreqs" "false" in case that made a difference (it didn't). Nothing changed on my sr options. The latest xorg.conf is:

Try changing;
Code:
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
to;
Code:
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1440x900"
EndSubSection

I actually noticed that I forgot to add the "1440x990" statements to the subsections after I made my original post here. I had added them several times before as I was trying different things. That, however didn't help any when I did. The only thing that changed was more sr options were added in the drop down menu under "configure desktop", none of them were 1440x990. Previously, when the only line was "1440x990", I could not get to the graphical login. Thanks for the reply.

Put a # in front of this;
HorizSync 30-82
VertRefresh 55-70
# 1440x990 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 61.50 kHz; pclk: 118.08 MHz
Modeline "1440x990_60.00" 118.08 1440 1528 1680 1920 990 991 994 1025 -HSync +Vsync
If that doesn't work try comment this;
#Option "UseEdidFreqs" "false"
then if it still is no good look at the log;
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Commenting out the refresh rates and the option did nothing. (except to make it 640x480!) The log has a line "(WW) NVIDIA(0): No valid modes for "1440x990"; removing."

Can a valid video mode be added, or am I SOL with this motherboard? FWIW, everything works in win 2000sp4.

Here is my xorg.conf that l am using in 6.5.00 and the resolution you want is available to me. Perhaps you can fine tune yours using mine as an example. Wayne

In system folder in slackware.

My wife is working on the puter with ubuntu on it. in slackware its under system settings. not sure if it is in the same place on ubuntu although i have nvidia drivers on all systems here. will find it in ubuntu soon as i can get on the puter and see if i can remember what i did to get that setting. i know i used the NVIDIA X server settings utility, just don't remember how i got to it.

In the modeline, try deleting the ".00" from the name. That has caused me problems.
Code:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "unknown"
ModelName "unknown"
Option "DPMS" "true"
HorizSync 30-82
VertRefresh 55-70
# 1440x990 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 61.50 kHz; pclk: 118.08 MHz
Modeline "1440x990_60" 118.08 1440 1528 1680 1920 990 991 994 1025 -HSync +Vsync
Option "UseEdidFreqs" "false"
EndSection
Also add "1440x990_60" to the display subsection:
Code:
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1440x990_60" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
...
The name of the modeline needs to match exactly.

Do you have 3 monitors (Monitor, Monitor0, Monitor1)? It's hard keeping track of what is what in your xorg.conf.

@Hern_28, Mepis is based on Ubuntu but quite a bit different. The controls are all custom and it uses KDE instead of gnome.

@jschiwal, you get the daily prize. Yes, I only have one monitor. Mepis put all that other stuff in there during the install. This is the only hardware I have ever had on this machine. The problem was the modeline didn't match the modes in the sub sections. I had originally made a typo and put 1440x990 instead of 1440x900, but even at 1440x990, it displayed once I made your fix. Thanks to all who chimed in.

EDIT: Now isn't this interesting! Mepis updated the modelines and cleaned up the file in general all by itself. I had only manually added the one modeline dealing with the 1440x900 res.

The new, working, xorg.cong file is:

2 things, 1st thanks bluesman2333 for the MEPIS Wiki link. I just bought a wide screen flat panel monitor & have been struggling to get it to work right in 3.3.2 -- that article looks like the answer.

2nd, a gentle suggestion (not aimed at any 1 person -- this thread is 1 where the whole file could turn out to be needed), instead of posting the entire config file here, put it at http://pastebin.ca/ or http://pastebin.com/ (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastebin); then reference only the pertinent portions in your post(s). It's not that it will save LQ server space, it's that potential helpers won't have to wade through the non-essential parts, while having access to the whole thing if that is necessary.

I posted the whole xorg.conf file so others could see where the changes fit in. If you use the wiki link and gtf, you can substitute your gtf stuff on your own xorg.conf file. Use the suggestion to clean up the gtf output or it might not work as mine didn't. Please post back or start a new thread if you have more trouble.
