Mepis v.8 Linux Live: boots Windows notebook OK but cannot access the C:\Windows etc. folders where I need to delete/copy etc files.
Alternative Linux - Knoppix etc - that boot from CD I should try?
Thx for help

Have you attempted to manually mount your windows partition with ntfs-3g?

Perhaps it seems that you can't access the partition know as "C:\" in "Winders" because you don't know its Linux name yet. Maybe we need to give you some links to threads & other sources of basic info on file systems & partition naming in Linux.

Mepis should see the Windows folders by default..

I think there will be a folder on Mepis called "media"--look for some disk icons and try right-clicking and see if there is a "mount" option.

Which version of Mepis, you did not indicate?

Mepis 7 & 8 tis easy, since you are using a live CD:
Kmenu> System> File System> Kdiskfree and you should see the ntfs volume.

As in all Linux distros I have ever tried, you must mount the additional drives Linux or Microsoft to have a look about in the drive. Right click on the ntfs drive and left click on mount. If there are no errors on the drive it will mount, if there are errors on the drive follow the instructions...

Once the volume is mounted, right click on the drive and open, the drive will open in Konqueror.

on the Desktop, I usually right click ->
create new - link to device - hard disk device ->
in the device drop box, pick the correct device <hda?>

in this case probably hda1

...thanks everybody for advice - what worked finally for me was Knoppix - it runs from a CD or USB drive and gives me immediate access to the hard disk.
