broken MEPIS after update, looking for new "stable" repositories - any ideas?

hey all-
beinig a linux user I often switch my distro and I learn a lot on the way through them. But when someone asked recently to give them MEPIS, I was happy to do so.

About a week ago they did their first update, using Synaptic, and all went well (or so i heard over the phone). Now, however, the bootup just brings them to a terminal login, no KDE. I haven't reached them over the phone to try to help, but I am hoping that i needn't make the hour-long drive to try to fix this myself.

I am guessing/hoping that another round of updates will fix this? I am not positive that they even changed their sources from the .us and .non-us that is default with MEPIS, but assuming they did, should this bring them back on course?

And once we fix it, one way or another, what are some decent repositories that we can switch to that are STABLE so that we needn't have this problem again? I've been to apt-get.org but i'm not sure what exactly to look for.

thanks all!

p.s. why have my (default) fonts all changed since my last MEPIS update!?

sorry again, that post isn't what i am looking for. so... easiest for me right now is a reinstall of the live cd, saving the /home

I had a similar problem with my fonts. Are you using Synaptic to update? If you are, go to settings/preferences and make sure that the System upgrade is set to Default upgrade. I read in another forum to set it to Smart upgrade but I found out the Smart upgrade uses Debian packages as well as the Mepis packages to update. After I downloaded many mb's and installed them, it changed many things on my Mepis system including the fonts. I had to do a clean install. Also I use the same repositories you had a link to (http://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...941#post1827941) Hope this helps some!

KDE in progress

MEPIS is specifically warning against upgrading presently as they have a new KDE in progress, saying your distro will fail.

They have also announced you should delete the non-us rep's in the sources list

I suggest you reinstall after backing up your data.

Heres a copy of the sources.list in the new testing of MEPISLite 3.2 test01

/etc/apt/sources.list

# See sources.list(5) for more information

# This file should be edited through synaptic
# New sources should be added only in the section at the end of this file!

# Primary
deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free

# MEPIS apt pool - specific packages available on-line
deb http://apt.mepis.org/3.3.2/ etch main

# mplayer
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sid main

apt.conf is set to "testing" and 500000 by default

Tyro :)
