Hi Georgina: Why do you have more then one audio card?

I only have one sound card in my machine, so I can't test this, but in System Configuration (Settings) -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System -> Hardware there is a setting to "Override device location".

I could be wrong, but I would assume one of your cards is /dev/audio0 and the other /dev/audio1. I would try putting /dev/audio1 in that setting and see what happens.

Hoe member Wayne. I have only one audio card installed, yet Linux Mepis 6 finds another which in kmix shows to line inputs and a video input and gives it the designation SAA7134. I can only suppose that it picks up the audio in my dialup modem. I can't think where else it comes from. I don't have this problem in Windows XP.

timekb4cq Newbie. Many thanks - your suggestions seems to work fine. I have looked at that entry in Sound system -> hardware many times and wondered what sort of entry it required.

Hi Georgina: Do you have a separate sound card installed or do you use onboard sound on your motherboard? If you have installed a sound card then the onbaord one needs to be disabled ... just a thought?

The SAA7134 is supposed to be a TV capture card. I should think you would know if you had one of those.

I wonder if the pci id numbers for something in your machine are close to those for one of the cards using that chipset, making it be misidentified.

If you're curious, you can run System > Kinfocenter -> PCI and find out the rest of the info given for the part identified as SAA7134. We might be able to figure out what it is.

No! I have not got two audio cards installed on my computer. From member timkb4cq - he has been able to inform me that the card which is identified by Linux is a TV Capture card, and this makes sense as I have a TV Capture card installed. timkb4cq also has given me the solution to my problem, which is to enter the audia card in Sound system -> hardware. However thanks for your interest.

Member timkb4cq. Your information is quite correct. I have a TV Capture card installed on my computer. I did not think of this. Windows keeps audio and TV seperate, and the problem never occurs there. Although your suggestion previously works fine, there must be a Konsole command that enables the system to identify the audio card after boot up, so that when Audacity finds no input/output, it can be made to find it. Perhaps you could help here.

It is one of the irritating things I find with Linux that it does not recognise everything you want to use at bootup. I have two ATA HDs and two SATA, but Linux only recognises at bootup hdb1;2;3. None of the others are recognised, not even hdb4. All these I have to mount after bootup.

I am afraid your suggestion to solve my problem with Audacity is not the solution. It seemed to work, but after I had returned to use Windows, and then returned to Linux, the problem occured again.

I have Linux on hdb and Windows on hda. I have to use the bios to select which hardrive becomes the boot drive. I can't get the grub to work in this setup. I have found that Linux identifies in the Grub hdb as hd0, but it does not work for booting windows from the Grub when I make hda hd1 in the Grub. I found that when I placed Linux on a partition of hda, then the Grub worked, but when booting Windows I was always told Windows had not been properly shut down, which was irritating.
