anti-MEPIS opinion
 

I tried MEPIS, but didn't much like the interface as it appears before any user modifications. (And why would I bother making trivial settings changes on a live CD distribution, for obvious reasons.) I think it tries too hard to be cute and cuddly, especially in its having an aquarium on the toolbar and its silly logo of a dragon or something (I forgot exactly what it was) at the exit screen. (More examples upon request.) It doesn't look as blandly functional as Knoppix, which I like. I thought it was trying to go for a Macintosh feel. I don't have anything negative to say about any other aspect of MEPIS, though.

Where's the dragon? I haven't got it on my Mepis 3.4.3.:(

I think it was a dragon; since I only saw it for a few seconds while logging out, all I was positive of was that it's green. You should see if if you are using the "SimplyMepis"(?) live CD--I assume it's the latest version.

And I respectfully disagree with your signature. Philosophy's primary goal is to understand the world. Certainly, it aims to understand the world *before* aiming to change it. Intellectuals used to value reflection over action, and some number of them still do. If the moderator wishes to delete this post, I understand.

The dragon is in every distro that uses KDE. The dragon is Konqi, the KDE mascot. Some say that don't like Konqi, but I think he is alright.

Yes, well, I don't mind dragons; the issue is that I prefer not to have cutesy graphics displayed by default.

To get back to the original post, without the dragons and fish which really have nothing to do with whether one would or shouldn't like a particular OS. Being somewhat more familiar with mandrake and having tried freebsd (unix), I thought I'd give Mepis a look. I do like the install, and the fact that everything works ( except for an easily corrected newbie error while setting up the video card ). So then I thought I'd try to install more games as that is what I do on my computer mostly. I am still looking for the apts I need to get and then I got the bright idea to try and install wine... yah, I think I'll just stick to windows xp for my games. It looks as if it's the same story as before, trying to locate the correct libraries and xfree components and all that fun stuff that made me run from linux and unix the first time (and just where is that Mepis 'pool' I keep hearing about?). I'll leave mepis on this computer to surf the web and as a print server but other than that, I'll just move my butt across the room to my xp box to play my games.

Yeah, MEPIS did install very smoothly.

Linux really isnt a gaming OS, why? Because its not popular enough for commercial developers to take note.
other than that everything else here seems to be a whine about the default layout, or lack of knowledge about how linux works.

Well I have just installed Mepis (I have ran it as a live since last year (ish)) i am very impressed, my friend is attempting to bring me over to Suze which I have also used (as a live.) I have to say I prefer Mepis as it is a friendly asthetic good all round windows desktop replacement, i cant fault it (yet) :rolleyes:

I would like to add that I've decided to move on to Debian - hey, get-apt really impresses me but I do like to muck around under the 'hood' and if I forget to enter 3 into the startup command, I end up having to reboot to start up without X in Mepis as ctrl alt backspace results in a very fast X restart. I would like to recommend that if anyone (new to linux) has a different video card other than the 'big 2', run the Mepis installer, leave the video card settings alone. After Mepis starts - print out your /etc/X11/xorg.conf for all your other settings, mouse, keyboard etc., copy xorg.conf to xorg.conf.old and then run xorgconfig which will allows you to select other video cards. MAKE SURE you get your monitor settings right or smoke may happen and not in a nice way.

no rpm hell in a debian system,thats why i use mepis the most.its a fully functioning system right out of the box.very newbie friendly.
