Xterm issue

Here's my problem I've set up my Mandrake 9.2 server to XDMCP broadcast. My remote client is a wyse 5150se thin client. It works great except for this one application which requires it's own "special" xfonts which are located in the application's source directory under /usr. How do I get the client to recognize those fonts? I tried puting them explicitly in the XF86Config-4 file under FontPath=. I've tried logging in to a bash prompt and using xset +fp to set the path. The xset chokes on the xset giving me the syntax. Which I follow exactly and it doesn't seem to work. I'm stuck how do I get the client to use the fonts I need for them to use?

Thanks

Did you run 'mkfontdir' in the directory with your special fonts?

man mkfontdir

Ok, thanks for the tip btw. I ran the mkfontdir using the syntax $ mkfontdir <path to fonts> which built a file called fonts.dir in the path to the fonts I'm trying to use.

I then ran $xset fp rehash which per the man page I should do after a mkfontdir. Here's what I'm getting for errors:

xset: bad font path element (#55), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has the wrong permissions --- directory exists and has 777 permissn
Directory missing fonts.dir --- file is in the fonts directory
Incorrect font server address or syntax --- this might be the problem

Hint:

Look for the path where the font msfg0816cb.bdf is

$ find / -name msft0816cb.dbf -print

and set the font path to this path

$ xset +fp <found path>

You can add the xset command to your /u/cptall/.openwin-init script file.

Now i've done the find the font is located in /usr/FSsrc/xfonts.

I ran a mkfontdir in that path as cptall (the application owner username) and created the font.dir.

I ran an xset fp rehash

I then ran the recommended xset command

$xset +fp /usr/FSsrc/xfonts

I get these errors:

xset: bad font element (#55), possible causes are ....

which is the same error I get when I tried to run the application.

Now the really interesting part is if I run the application from the console in a terminal window it runs just great. I get this problem when I run the application in a terminal window on a client. I must say this is confusing the heck out of me. Is it looking for the font on the client or on the server. Needless to say I'm massively confused and beginning to hate Xwindows, LOL.

9.2 and most of the 9.x releases used a seperate font "server" process.

I believe it was called xfs.

All you need to do is to add the font to xfs, then make sure that your wyse is configured to obtain fonts from your Linux boxes's xfs IP & port.

This will cause the wyse to download the fonts it needs from your Linux box.

X itself does not transfer the font files over. It relies on the client (your Wyse X "server" implementation) to do it's own management.

I'm not worthy. That worked like the proverbial charm. Good grief that was a sweat maker. Thank you sir or madam you've saved my sanity. I've been fighting with getting this application working through a remote xterm on and off for about 3 months. You have my graditude.

And I must say that in more than 20 years of experience in the computing professional community I've worked on nearly every OS from IBM DOS (not PC Dos missed that one some how) to MS DOS to HP MPE, MPE/XA to about a dozen flavors of UNIX I've become a huge fan of the linux community in general and the Mandrake community in particular for just plain willingness to help strangers in their strange land.

Thanks
