XP won't load...grub hid partition?

Hi, I installed Mandrake 9.2 on a separate hard drive from Windows, which is on my primary master. Mandrake installed grub to the master boot record. and now when i try to load windows from grub...death. the windows boot graphic shows and then it says "cannot find autochk.exe" or something like that. i've read that i'm supposed to somehow unhide my windows ntfs partition using the grub.conf file, but my boot/grub directory doesn't contain any grub.conf file!

here's what i get when i type in ls of my /boot/grub:

device.map ffs_stage1_5 menu.lst minix_stage1_5 stage2
e2fs_stage1_5 install.sh menu.once reiserfs_stage1_5 vstafs_stage1_5
fat_stage1_5 jfs_stage1_5 messages stage1 xfs_stage1_5

oh yeah, and i'm a total linux newbie, this being my first time ever linuxing...and i want my windoze back 'cause my brain is exploding trying to install java virtual machine so i can yahoo it up and play my friend chess, and she's even more of a newbie than i am, so she's basically limited to yahoo, no fics or anything.

thanks in advance for any help, let me know if there's anything i can clarify, but please give me the commands to find the info, 'cause, again, i'm totally n00btacular.

menu.lst is the file that counts. Post it in this thread.

Edit, for what it's worth, this is the one on this machine which boots Mandrake 9.1, Windows XP and scratch
Code:
timeout 10
color green/black light-green/black
default 1

title Mandrake
kernel (hd0,7)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda8 quiet devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=off vga=788

title Windows
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

title Scratch
root (hd0,6)
kernel --no-mem-option /boot/lfskernel root=/dev/hda7 vga=788

[edited to add:
c: (win xp home) is hda1
hdb1 is linux, hdb5 is swap, hdb7 is /home

i tried booting from the mandrake install cd to see if there was a repair option, and when it got to the partitioning part of installation, i think it just had my windows c drive greyed out as unformatted, while detecting everything else, which is weird because diskdrake detects everything.]

I think you may have to reinstall Windows to fix this. Have you backed up everything on that partition? If not, can you access the stuff on the Windows partition and back it up from there? I've never had a problem booting Windows XP from grub but if I did, that's what I'd do. Good luck getting it all straightened out.

I have the same problem.

When I load windows xp from the mandrake os chooser thingy (I'm very technical with my language) then it just says, cannot load autochk, and then restarts.

This is quite a problem, as XP is the only OS I've got internet working on on my computer at the moment. (I'm having to use college computers at the moment)

Has anyone come up with a solution since this was first posted????
