XMMS crashing in MDK 10 Official

Everytime I try to play an .mp3 XMMS crashes, it just freezes, does nothing and I have to kill it. Anyone else experience this?

On a related note, what do you use as your .mp3 player? Is there a better one than XMMS?

Thanks.....

A friend of mine running 10.0 has the same problem if he switches the output plugin to arts. Otherwise, xmms just works fine.

BTW, I use muine http://muine.gooeylinux.org/ or rhythmbox (itunes style) http://rhythmbox.org/ in addition to xmms.

Cheers,
matze

I have to agree. MDK 10 uses ALSA and XMMS seems to want to default to OSS output, ergo crash. Changing to aRTs or ALSA output should work (it did for me). I am using the ALSA output plugin, as I sometimes use another environment than KDE and I like the added responsiveness when XMMS doesn't have to start aRTs every time I use it for the first time. As far as other players, you might want to just cross your fingers. Lindows (now Linspire - yucky name) seems to have developed a nice looking media player, which they claim to be opensourcing to code for soon.

Thanks..... I had the same problem and had just decided to use Mplayer instead. I went in and changed XMMS to default to Alsa and BOOOOOOOOOOOOOYYAAAAAA! sound and no more crash! For a second there, I thought I was on a base Fedora machine!

Thanks Matze & VectorDrake

Naw. Mandy still allows the mp3 codecs, thankfully. Redhat is being too paranoid (its like the whole shit about freetype and the sub-pixel hinting disabled). I know why they did it, but you're right. That would suck.

By the way, when you were using Mplayer, did you figure out how to change the equalizer? I have never gotten the sliders to work. I don't care a lot, as I use it for watching video and movies (it'll play anything - even vcds before they're burnt .bin files), but it would be nice to know how.

Thanks for the help, people. BUT, I went to change to ALSA, and I can't choose any other options. Is there something I need to install/do?

Install the Alsa output plugin. Or just to the mandrakemenu config, look for the xmms icon and change it's name from soundwrapper xmms to xmms. I did that and no more crashes for me.

That did it. I just removed the "soundwrapper" from the run command in mandrakemenu. Thanks for the help.....
