xine doesn't play wmv9 files

xine doesn't seem to recognize the codecs I install. I put them in /usr/lib/codecs like I've seen in other posts, and I checked .xine/config to make sure the path was right to the codecs.
When I try to play wmv9 file I get a message:

Code:
Missing Windows Media 9 codec
btw, I put codecs in /usr/lib/win32 too for good measure

Rather use only one directory, it consumes less space and it's easier detecting if the codecs really work.

I have some version 9 files, some of them play and some don't (using Xine as backend). No idea why some of them don't work, but I haven't found any answer; all I get is an error telling me no appropriate codec was found (but like I said, some of them do work without problems).

A possibility, until that is solved (I have the same kind of problem for some videos) is to use an alternative media player.
In that regard, even though I don't like his ergonomy, the VLC media player never let me down and seems capable of handling all codecs available.

I switched to mplayer, which I was having problems with before.
I just switched the video driver and now everything work perfectly.

edit: I spoke too soon. found a wmv9 that didn't work with mplayer

Codec deceit

I suspect these codecs are what Windows is making its money on . Selling to Governments and manufacturers.
You use our product we do special stuff for you
You want our moviese to play on your device - you pay us 50 Million

So the codecs are really encryptions nowadays and if linux users want to see our movies they will have to pay so the codecs are not available to download until someone decrypts them

Try sites like "Sourceforge", "slashdot", "freshmeat", all dot org.

Search under multimedia, video, etc. Can't promise anything, but there are thousands of projects in the pipelines.

Just got to be something.

regards shorty.
