xfree86 starting problem
 

Hi all

Was playing around with the xfsetup tool in mcc to setup my video card to a sis 620 and not a 520 as it had set it up. It was working fine, just wanted it to use the 620 driver. Anyways set it up to use 620 and saved configuration and rebooted, but now on rebooting it boots up normal except that when it wants to load xfree86 to go to the login screen it doesn't, and just goes into a bash login prompt and i can log in to the system (root)from there but if i say startx it gives me this error:

Cannot find config file

No config file found!

x10: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on xserver ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Now i tried to take from a backup that it created and replace the xconfig file and xf86config file with that backup in the /etc/x11 folder but that did nothing, so copied the file from the /etc/x11 and put it in the /etc/ folder and rebooted and on doing so it then went into the xserver but is not quite aligned properly and when it gets to the screen where it displays the users, it shows very quickly and then restarts back at the beginning of loading xserver and then going to the login screen, and just seems to go in a continous loop.

The other thing i tried was to log in as root in bash and type xf86config to start the xf86 configurator to try and just setup x again with basics so i could at least just get in and sort out the problem, but did nothing either.

PLEASE Help as am new to mandrake and and have tried all i know and don't want to have to re-install mandrake. Am using mandrake 9.1

Ok have found out the first problem. Had downloaded and driver from the sis website for the 540 640 driver and installed that and that was causing all sorts of problems so mangaged to get into x and into mcc and then uninstalled the sis driver, so now it is not giving that error anymore but is now giving this one. Still boots into bash prompt.

Xinet: No such file or directory (errno 2): no server "X" in PATH

Use the --option, or make sure that /usr/X11R6/bin is in your path and that "X" is a program or a link to the right type of server for your display. Possible server names include:

XFree86 XFree86 displays

Giving up
xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2) : unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): server error

Have tried now to Run XFdrake as found out that that is what you run when you have damaged your xfree86, so ran that and setup the correct settings to as they were before but it still does not work.

First, at the command line as root, do 'urpmi XFree86'
This should help you reinstall the X-windows system

Second, at the command line as root, try 'XFdrake' to reconfigure X-windows

If all else fails, try removing XFree86 using rpm, then run the Mandrake CD, selectiong the upgrade option to 'upgrade' Mandrake 9.2 to mandrake 9.2 :)

When the installer gets to the screen with all the configuration options, you should be able to use the option to set up X-windows there

If i do the upgrade option, will it not affect any software that i already have installed e.g. opera or updates installed since orginal installation?

The upgrade option is a great way to "reset" your installation whitout affecting your software etc.
