x server crashes with message about screens

I installed Mandrake linux 10.0. All was well. Worked great. I was starting to explore and configure the OS to my liking. I shut it down ( properly ) last night. I tried to start this morning and the X server would not start. The following is an excerpt from the end of the file. Any help is appreciated.

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I could post the entire log file but that would be quite lengthy.

The only time I have seen the error your getting (although on a RedHat box) was after upgrading my kernel and not re-installing the nvidia drivers.

This is assuming you have an NVidia card - 'cos X is failing to load because it can't see an Nvidia device. ( if you have remove then replace your nvidia card - this may help)

I will give reinstalling the nvidia drivers a try and see what happens. I auto updated several packages last night. A kernel update could have been among them ( or something similar ). Thx for the info. I will report on the results.
