Wireless USB adaptor by XMicro

Hi, everyone,
I am trying to set up internet on my newly installed mandrivia workstation.
Hardware:
XMicro WLAN 11g USB Adapter.
I think it's this one: CAN'T|POST|URL|YET_techtastic.ca/reviews2/xmicro-adapter.html

Linux Mandrake 10.1 (or 10.2) Limited ed. 2005, kernel 2-6-11mdk

It seems that wireless adaptor is not found (in HardDrake I have some unknown device, hanging in the USB slot).

I don't know linux well, so, I'll just list the things that I've tried (none of them has worked):
in GUI mandrakelinux control center:
*) "Set up a new network interface -> wireless -> install from windows drivers"... Some weird characters (chineese?) appear as filenames when I insert my windows drivers cd-rom. No actual files or folders.
*) I tried to "install it manually", but no similar driver was found. I tried some options that follow 802.11b standard, and it didn't output any errors (just quickly opened\closed some windows, and threw me back to beginning of installation).

non GUI:
*) I found some linux drivers at CAN'T|POST|URL|YET_x-micro.com/drv-wlan.htm#XWL11BUZX then I installed the kernel package, and finally ran the make config, and showed where the kernes source is (otherwise it prompted error). It's the first time I use Linux, so I spent almost four hours looking for kernel source, ect... and finally, when I thought everything should be "in place", nothing happened... So I restarted the x-server... nothing happened. So I went to kernel directory, typed "make", it compiled a few files, but then reported a bunch of errors and quit.

Now I am completely stuck. I've wasted half of my day on seemengly simple thing, and I am not even close to understanding what am I supposed to do. Even if you don't know exact solution to my problem, can you give me a hint, on what's phylosophy behind all these complicated driver installation. Should I find some different driver sourcecode and recompile the kernel with it? Is there simple plug-and-play center that would do most of the job for me? Am I guessing correctly that it's a device problem, or rather something is wrong with my internet settings?

Thanks in advance...

Hi

I've got the same problem...
I'm running Mandrake 10.1 (kernel 2.6.xxx) and at the time of writing the drivers at X-micro's homepage are tested for kernel 2.4.xxx and that's probably the reason why they don't work for us. The guys at xmicro told me to check for newer drivers at RealTek's homepage (I think the drivers on xmicros homepage are originally made for RealTek WLAN cards) and there I found one for kernel 2.6.xxx tested with Red Hat dist.

Compiling works fine but when I run ./wlanup I get the following error message:

insmod: error inserting '8180_26_private.ko': -1 Invalid module format
insmod: can't read 'open8180.ko': No such file or directory
ERROR: Module open8180 does not exist in /proc/modules
ERROR: Module 8180_26_private does not exist in /proc/modules
Usage: ./wlanup {ap | infra | adhoc}

I don't know what to do. I even don't know whether I should run wlanup or not (the attached README file doesn't say very much) and according to the last line in the error message the command wlanup should be followed by some stuff which I don't know what it means.

So, this was probably not too good help for you but if you get the 2.6.xxx driver working please let me know...

/Magnus
