Just make a boot diskette with the ntdetect.com and ntldr .
Maybe you also need the boot.ini but probably not.
Get these files from your win xp cd.
When your win xp has started you are probably very happy :) .
Now just install some bootloader (f.e. bootus).
Be sure you install it in the mbr!

I put the ntdetect.com and ntldr on a floppy and tried to boot my computer with it, but it said it was an invalid disk. Should I put those files on my Windows 98 boot disk? If not, what should I do?

You have to make a boot diskette.
You can make a boot diskette in win xp if you format it and choose the option make a boot diskette or something. I have a dutch version of win xp, i don't know how it is named in an english version exactly.
Maybe you can also try it on an win 98 boot diskette.

I can't make a boot diskette unless I'm in Windows. They started phasing out bootable floppies in favor of bootable CD's when they started making XP, and I haven't found a way to make one from the CD, if there is a way at all.

i dont know if it works but have you already tried to boot from your win xp cd and then start the recovery console.
if it asks for the administrator password just press ENTER unless you have a password for the administrator account.
After that you just put your diskette in your diskette drive and then go to your a: drive with the command a:
Then you just type ntdetect.com

I just did that. Something popped up and said it wasn't a valid command or something like that

are you sure you were in the folder were the command ntdetect.com was in?

I did everything you told me to. I put those 2 files on my boot floppy. I started the comp with the XP CD and went into the Recovery Console. I put the floppy in and typed in a:, then I typed in ntdetect.com when the a: prompt came up. After all that, it said that ntdetect wasn't a valid command.

How many other people have had/are having this problem?

Been playing with mdk10 all night trying to get acpi and my laptop touchpad to work with no luck in 2.6.3 kernel, suddenly saw this post and nearly sh*tted my pants, so I quickly boot back into windows from lilo to see if I am one of the victims.

I have the same problem, I first thought it originated from another fat32 I deleted during install of 10.0, but when I tried reinstalling winXP it said no Operting system.

Lucky for me I never use windows, but for others it' ll be a real bummer

I think the only solution is to make a boot diskette with the files ntdetect.com and ntldr on it. You probably can make a boot diskette with mandrake.
