I don't know if you can use wine to actually install programs. It will run some but not all Wimdows programs and is most used for running MS applications undex Linux on a dual boot system. It will run MSWord, Excel & Access but it sometimes upchucks at extensive use of macros or complex VBA coding in MS applications.
For MS Word & Excel format documents the recommended Linux application is OpenOffice which will read/write in these formats.

if setup correctly, wine actually creates a directory called "fake_windows" -- inside of it, you'll find My Documents, Prgogram Files, WINDOWS -- all of the typical system files... it contains a kernel that allows you to run windows installers and install windows apps... anytime you open a *.exe file, wine will open... You can have wine run as a complete fake windows desktop, or as individual windows... if you choose the latter, you'd never know they were windows apps... it works for most apps, but not some... very good piece of software...

Hey, I'm new to Linux, and I was wondering how to run my Windows games. I've heard my friend, who introduced me to linux, talk of Wine, and I was wondering where to get it, how to install and use it, and if its the only way to run my games. I'm a noob, so keep it simple.

you have to DL the main package, then also DL "winesetuptk"
follow the install instructions for each... then go to a term and type "winesetuptk" -- the setup is straight forward...

let me konw if you need more help..i'll do what i can..

I guess winex is not not a directx emulator, wine is just not an emulator :-)

Get the newest Mandrake RPM package from winehq.com, don't use the one that came with Mandrake.

I wouldn't even try installing any XP stuff and running it.

You got to set up your config file properly or it won't work.

I tried 200311128 and Word 2000, Excel 2000, Powerpoint 2000 installed and appeared to work, but it was a big waste of time because it was chock-full-o-bugs.

You can't load all the shared office applications because they will lock up the apps right away.

I had Adobe Photoshop 7.0 running, but it would lock-up doing some things.

Here is the config I used that made it work. The sound didn't work, so I just disabled it.

Code:
WINE REGISTRY Version 2
;; All keys relative to \\Machine\\Software\\Wine\\Wine\\Config

;; If you think it is necessary to show others your complete config for a
;; bug report, filter out empty lines and comments with
;; grep -v "^;" ~/.wine/config | grep '.'
;;
;; MS-DOS drives configuration
;;
;; Each section has the following format:
;; [Drive X]
;; "Path"="xxx" (Unix path for drive root)
;; "Type"="xxx" (supported types are 'floppy', 'hd', 'cdrom' and 'network')
;; "Label"="xxx" (drive label, at most 11 characters)
;; "Serial"="xxx" (serial number, 8 characters hexadecimal number)
;; "Filesystem"="xxx" (supported types are 'msdos'/'dos'/'fat', 'win95'/'vfat', 'unix')
;; This is the FS Wine is supposed to emulate on a certain
;;   directory structure.
;;   Recommended:
;;   - "win95" for ext2fs, VFAT and FAT32
;; - "msdos" for FAT16 (ugly, upgrading to VFAT driver strongly recommended)
;; DON'T use "unix" unless you intend to port programs using Winelib !

winesetuptk has not been the command to run setup for a while, it is simply winesetup now.
