Question Which Mobo to get?

I am considering get a little faster Mobo for the Linux system. I have a new WD100 10G HD(7200rpm) arrive today. I have ordered a modem that is supposed to come with Linux drivers.
Now I need input on Mobo/CPU selection. I was shopping in the mid range say 1ghz approx Duron, Athlon,Celeron etc. and in the neighborhood of $100 or less for the combo. Just like to get one that will not be hard to get to take the Mandrake 9.1 by a real newbie.

I have been using Biostar MOBOs. They run nicely with linux but
they fail too often so I tried an MSI MOBO and it is even better, cheap too. like $59, my Athlon 1700 1.44Ghz was like $62.

Check out directron.com. They are in Houston TX and their
shipping is lightening fast. I ordered at noon and recieved by UPS ground the next day. I live in Dallas. But they are fast.

They have tons of stuff and You can order online.

Thumbs up thanks

Thanks for the info. Will look. I have tried Linux on and off for a year and this Compaq is the only Mobo that I have gotten all functions to work. (Onboard sound and Audio) Just if I can find a modem that I can make work now. I am on number 3 and have ordered number 4!! I do like the 9.1 and want to get a good system running all the way!

What you are trying to do is make a WINMODEM work on Linux.
You can and I have done it. But this is easier and faster.
They use no CPU resources.

I have some used US Robotics 56K X2 external modems. Not the latest but better than any internal modem And I sell them for $30 shipping included. (CONUS only)

These are hardware modems that I garrantee to work with any
flavor of Linux.

If you want one I accept paypal ( selquip@netscape.net ) Just let me know you paid and I will ship ASAP

I hope is didn't violate any forum restrictions. He did ask about
modems.

Shuttle AK32A

I love this motherboard. Lets me use either PC133 or DDR266 speed RAM (one or the other, not both at the same time.)

It's very fast and stable. I had trouble getting Mandrake 9.1 to work with the onboard sound, but I think that's more of a problem with Mandrake being generally hard to configure sound, than it is a motherboard problem. I got around it by spending about $7.00 on a PCI soundcard from Newegg. It's actually a great sounding card, if you have good speakers.

Directron is a very good supplier, but I prefer Newegg even more. They have free shipping on a lot of their items and the fastest service I've ever seen.
