Question Which Lilo Boot option is best to use?

In Mandrake 10 (and some other distros too) there seems to be many different boot options installed- i686- upto 4GB, linux and quite a few others. Which is best to set as my default and what's the difference between them? The only difference I can see between the "i686-upto 4GB" & "linux" is that one gives me a graphic style boot while the other is text based?!?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance

Steve

the i686 upto 4gb option is for more than 4 gigs of memory (ram). if that's not your scenerio, you don't need it.

The best option would be the one which suits your system the most. That would be the one which appears when you recompile the kernel according to your hardware and your needs.

A small completion... if your hardware supports it... add vga=791 as boot option to the kernel to get the console in 1024x768 framebuffer mode (the text console gets more chars/row and rows per screen). You do this by adding a vga=791 line in lilo before the boot entries.
