If you have an rpm, say emacs-21.6-31mdk.i586.rpm, and want to know what it contains
you can type 'rpm -qlp /path/to/emacs-21.6-31mdk.i586.rpm' and you'll see a list of the files (with full path).

If you have installed the rpm you can run 'rpm -ql emacs'
If you don't know what the package was called, but remember it was emacs-something you can run
'rpm -qa | grep emacs' to see a list of installed emacs-related packages.

And my answer was: you have to run 'rpm -ql <package-name>' to find out.

Most rpm's install files all over the place. The "bc" rpm (the precision calculator) for instance installs:
/usr/bin/bc
/usr/bin/dc
/usr/share/doc/bc-1.06
/usr/share/doc/bc-1.06/AUTHORS
/usr/share/doc/bc-1.06/COPYING
/usr/share/doc/bc-1.06/COPYING.LIB
/usr/share/doc/bc-1.06/FAQ
/usr/share/doc/bc-1.06/NEWS
/usr/share/doc/bc-1.06/README
/usr/share/info/bc.info.bz2
/usr/share/info/dc.info.bz2
/usr/share/man/man1/bc.1.bz2
/usr/share/man/man1/dc.1.bz2

Some, especially non Mandrake specific rpm's like Suns JRE rpm and Firefox, only put files in their own subdirectories
(usually in /opt).

Actually, you don't need to worry much about where the programs are stored. If you use the standard Mandrake package manager (urpmi/rpmdrake) and its repositories to install software, the programs will be installed wherever they are *supposed* to be.

Most apps will end up either in, or linked into, /usr/bin, with supporting files being scattered around in /usr/lib, /usr/share, /usr/local, etc.
