Question weird type of screen flicker - mandrake 9.1

Heyas, recently installed Mandrake 9.1 on my second pc - was having lots of problems but i have resolved all now almost, but have created a new one somewhere.

Originally my problem was that the video mode (resolution and bit depth) wouldnt change, but I have fixed that now - instead I now get a nasty flicker all over my screen. Its like tearing or static.. parts of the screen appear over another part of the screen just for a second or less. Noticably it only really does it if there is alot of movement on the screen (ranging from mouse movement or to a progress bar or scrolling chat window) - if its just sat on my desktop with nothing moving then it barely flickers at all (although it still does).

My presumption is the horizontal and vertical refresh rates are set wrong for my monitor. The problem is the monitor is old (IBM.. E54 if i remember correctly) and was not on the list of monitors to use in XFDrake :/ The back of the monitor just says 60hz and didnt specify vert or hor rates so i couldnt enter custom accuratly. I dont think i ever got a manual for that monitor and if i did god knows where it is :/

So could anyone please confirm that a) yes this is a monitor refresh rate problem and if possiable b) any idea where i can find the specs for my monitor?

Also, one last thing, is it possiable to download an updated monitor database or something for mandrake? I couldnt see anything that looked like one in the Mandrake Update program - but maybe if there is a newer one i can find my monitor inside? Any help you can give is greatly appreichated, thankyou for your time ^_^

a) i guess you won't know until you try
b) here's a google (IBM+E54+monitor) -- you can probably find the specs easily enough from one of the links: http://www.google.com/search?q=IBM+E54+monitor
