Exclamation Very odd NVidia Driver Problem...

I tried installing UT2004 the other day, but it came up with an error. So, I assumed it was an NVidia problem, so I downloaded the driver from their website, disabled the X-server from starting up, and ran the installation. All went well, but it alerted me that the rivafb module was installed, and it had conflicts. Anyway, I ran the "kde" command and it came up just fine. UT2004 worked too (even better than windows). Then when I was in the middle of the game, it crashed and I had to pull the plug. When it came back up, the X server said that it couldn't find the NVIDIA kernel module... So, I installed it again and the x server worked again in the same session. I tried rebooting with the mandrake kernel (since I'm using one I compiled) and that worked, but UT2004 didn't work.

I assume that this problem is with the "rivafb" module, but how can I remove it?

Look in /etc/X11/XF86Free?

I tried to find the UT2004 linux d/l and couldn't. If you are talking about a free or shareware version could you post a link?

That rivafb warning commonly means nothing. check nvnews.net linux forum too.

Yup as he said.

The module is PRESENT, but is not loaded unless you explicitly tell Linux to do so.

So you can disregard the warning.

If Linux is hanging up on you, you may need to play with the NVIDIA AGP & memory settings as it may be a bit too agressive for your system.

e.g. use AGP4X instead of 8X, etc.

You wouldn't notice the difference anyway.

Ok, I figured out the problem. I had to run the command "modprobe nvidia" before it would work, so I just added it to the modules.preload file, and it seems to work fine.

Also, UT2004 (unreal tournament 2004) is not free, it's about $30. There is a windows and linux version on the same 5 cd set. (i think there's a demo on www.unrealtournament.com)
