Thank you for the suggestion. I had considered the thought after I made the post but I decided not to do so since I do not recall what version of the RPM was used. Also, I recently had the issue on a Fedora Core 4 machine. So perhaps this is a specific issue with webmin or a version of it's package that was made available for FC and Mandriva. Until I know more details about what circumstances it occurs under and if it still occurs with new revisions it might be a bit hasty to put one in. I had installed webmin back around August of last year and removed it a few weeks ago.

I'll dig around in my logs and see if I can find the missing pieces. If I do, I'll put a ticket into whichever project is responsible for the issue. In the interim if anyone else experiences this problem perhaps they can assist in painting the picture.

I just wanted to say I'm running 2007.1 Spring i586 pp and have webmin installed and the line "kern.=debug -/var/log/bandwidth" is not present in /etc/syslog.conf. Things seem normal for now.

The Mandriva 2007 erratta contains a refference to a problem in Webmin and a fix.

In webmin under Networking -> Bandwidth Monitoring click "Turn Off Monitoring"

It removes "the kern.=debug -/var/log/bandwidth" from syslog.conf

It's a good idea if your are using the system as fileserver.

Not only will /var/log/bandwidth fill up your disk but syslogd and klogd will use a lot of CPU when you move big files to or from the system.

Do you use DSL? I use to have absolutely the same problem on my Mandriva 2006 box.I fix it very easy-just put all this growing files in Webmin/LogRotate section,set up the rotation and the problem dissappear.

I have been using Centos Linux 4.4 on my server with Webmin. And when i update virtualmin on my server for 2 week ago. I had a lot of log file error.

And the last one is too big /var/log/banwidth file.

In one day file size reached to 10 GB size. So no space on my disc.

I want to ask that, if i do Networking -> Bandwidth Monitoring click "Turn Off Monitoring", is this create a security or any other problem on my system?

And can you give me some linux server management advice source links, i am too new on linux system. So it is so diffucult to solve where is the problem.

AFAICT, the change will disable band width monitoring and nothing else so it should not weaken your system security. Since I am not a Linux security guru, I may be in error, but I believe bandwidth monitoring is most useful in troubleshooting access or performance issues. Unless a DOS attack on your server is in progress, I do not see how else this would relate to system security.

In a situation where you want to keep bandwidth monitoring running (e.g.: to possibly alert you to a DOS attack), you may want to run tail on the file periodically (e.g.: in cron) to control its size. If once per hour is inadequate, you can try each half hour or quarter hour.
