I have just installed Mandrake 9.1 on a P4 system(yes I know it's old but I have to support some hardware on a 2.4 kernel hence I'm using 9.1) and I'm having trouble with USB.

When I do a lsusb it shows me the error:

Sure enough when I go to /proc/bus/ I only see pci/ and no usb/

I try to then mount usbdevfs with mount -t usbdevfs none /proc/bus/usb but I get the error message that there's no such mount point as /proc/bus/usb.

My USB mouse is however working, though it's detected as a PS/2 mouse, and the wheel isn't working.

Does anyone know what's wrong?

You can get more information on your system and what Linux detected by using the following command:

# dmesg

If you know the brand of your mouse, you can see if it was detected. Also, you can configure your mouse by editing the Xorg config file and adding configuration data to the file. You would need to find some sample Xorg config files for your mouse type if that is new to you.

# vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Alternately, you can use the Xorg configuration utility. It can be a different name, but try:

# xorgsetup

There also should be some Administration utilities in the main Menu, a Control Center or a Utility that allows hardware configuration.
