run "urpmi.update -a" as root
if that fails check the Media Manager in the Software section of the Mandrake control panel and make sure the sources are "enabled"
if that fails
reboot and try again

(just to check... you are running urpmi as root?
because it won't work for an ordinary user - without setting up a sudo account)

Did you try to use it as a normal user? It only works if you are running it as root.

Yup as posted above...

Also an erroneously terminated process or still running background update will lock the rpm processes.

They are cleared automatically upon a reboot or you could try doing this by hand...

Usually though you WANT background rpm updates to complete...

ps -aux | grep rpm

to see if you have anything rpm related running in the background.

Wink

I didn't imply that you were dumb, it's a common mistake that anyone can do

Similarly, you'll sometimes see this when actually trying to add sources/mirrors - a re-boot often does the trick

Two lock files are created in '/var/lib/urpmi' - .LOCK and .RPMLOCK. If either of these exist, delete them. Then rerun rpm or urpmi.

It could be a source issue. Try another one.
