URPMI - How to update software

I have XMMS version 1.2.7. I notice on the XMMS website that the most recent is 1.2.10.

I do this in console:

urpmi xmms

then it says that everything is installed, which it is, but I want URPMI to upgrade it to 1.2.10. How do I do this?

Hello!

If your rpm media source is not updated, your system doesn't "know" there is a new version of installed program available. So you must update the it first.
The easiest way is using the script, writen by the site manager of the Slovenian Mandrake Users Website:
Code:
cd /var/tmp && wget -q --output-document=mpnen http://mandrakeprinas.org/mpnen && chmod +x mpnen && ./mpnen && rm -f mpnen
Just copy the script into console as regular user and run it. When the menu popup window appears, select first two options and the rpm sources will be updated. Try the rest of the options as well, you will not be sorry!

if there isn't a rpm of the new version of an application in any of your sources, you can urpmi/wget until the cows come home, but you won't get the newer version. i just checked, & "cooker" sources have that new version of xmms, but not "contrib". so, if you want to install it there's 2 things you can do.

1. go to Easy URPMI & set up cooker sources for yourself. (it would be good to also get contrib, main, & plf sources while you're at it.) please note, cooker apps can be (notoriously) unstable. use at your own risk.

2. download one of the .tar files from the xmms site & compile/install that way.

As a side note...... Does mandrake use Checkinstall??? If you can load that you could compile from source and then if you don't like it you could easily uninstall it.
I haven't checked to see if there is an RPM for checkinstall, but if there is, that may be a way to get the new version of xmms you want and still be able to have a clean uninstall if needed.
