(urgent) Problem with ide going from lilo into mandrake

I have an HP computer running Windows XP home edition.

I installed Mandrake on it (for the umpteenth time...) earlier this day. There were no problems reported to me when I installed.

I put the boot loader onto the harddrive, rather than a floppy as I had tried before.

I tried using lilo, but it wouldn't boot linux, so I tried instead a mode called linux-nonfb, the same but text only instead of graphical, and when starting, stopped on a line saying the following:

ide1 at 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15

There once again was no error message, only a blinking cursor on the next line as though it were going to continue, but it just stays there forever.
if I can't solve this mandrake will make me sad

thanks for helping this
