Upgrading to Mandriva Linux 2008
Hi,
I am a Linux newbie, and I am currently using Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring. I see that Mandriva Linux 2008 is now available for download. Can I install it over the older version so that my files and settings are not lost? I have never done this before; when I upgraded from 2006 to 2007 I formatted the hard drive and did a clean install. And also, my computer is quite old: P3 1137 MHz 512 MB SD RAM Intel i810E2 motherboard. I was wondering if that could be a problem. The Live CD seems to work fine. |

My 2 cents are anyway that after the backup do a clean install.... that is what I'm gonna do... ;) :) edit: you can always do a nice and easy backup using drakbackup |
If you have a separate /home partition, you might be better off doing a clean install and do not format the /home partition, where your files and settings are kept. I tried an update yesterday (and the Mandriva forums are also talking of this) and the initial package selection process is taking 20-30 minutes, the actual updating is taking hours, and many times it is getting hung up and not finishing. I tried for 4 hours yesterday to go the update route, and finally just did the clean install, formatting ONLY MY / PARTITION, NOT MY /HOME, and all files and settings are still there.

That's what I'm going to do, a clean install, Save /home.
It's been downloading for two days now (90%), I should have it setup tomorrow. :) |
