Upgrading to kde 3.3 using mandrake 10.1 CE

hello everyone,

i just finished downloading CDs 4 and 5 of mandrake 10.1 CD. after adding both cds to my media sources, i tried to upgrade my installation of kde 3.2.3 to kde 3.3.

googling around, i found some posts (on this forum btw), that told me to either do a "urpmi kdebase" or upgrade via the mandrake control center.

after trying both however, things started breaking up. i'm now unable to get into kde (i'm stuck at kdm, after logging my username and password, i always get back to the prompt).

i'd like to know how to go about upgrading my kde 3.2.3 to 3.3? or better yet, how to install kde 3.3 by default whenever i do a fresh install.

thanks.

Hi!

I'm still on the stage of figuring out how to upgrade :-)
How did you do it through the control centre? When I do urpmi kdebase it says everything is already installed.

Thanks for your help.

Is KDE the only window manager that doesn't work? I'm sure that KDM should have some other WM's you can try just to see if you can actually login. I'm thinking that if you have upgraded KDE then KDM *may* not be pointing to the correct location for KDE 3.3.

It's just a thought, I've never tried to upgrade whole window managers from RPM's since the last time I tried to, and failed.

Also, you may want to try pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 altogether to get to a terminal login screen, logging in, and then try loading kde manually by typing

Code:
kde
If you really want a fresh clean install of KDE though your best bet, IMO, is to try installing MDK10.1CE from scratch rather than upgrading. I stil don't believe the process works well enough and often enough to upgrade. Somebody prove me wrong though!

Be aware that KDE 3.3 will mess up your menu system if you are usign menudrake to manage the menus. You need to switch to kdemenuedit (I don;t know how to do that) to manage your menus. Once the upgrade is complete you will not be able to downgrade to a previous version. Unless you require the fucntionality of kde 3.3, my recommendation (I have done this twice, 1once on 10.1 cd and another 10.1 official) is to stay with kde 3.3 and wait until 10.2 comes along, maybe then kde 3.3 will be fully supported...
