Upgrading OpenOffice

Hi all.

I want to upgrade my OpenOffice 1.1.3 that comes standard with Mandrake 10.1 to OpenOffice 1.1.4.

What would be the easiest way of doing this?

Should I install a package that has a mandrake extension (mdk) like this: OpenOffice.org-1.1.4-5mdk.i586.rpm or will OOo_1.1.4_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz from the OpenOffice site do?

What is the difference?

Also what is the difference between regular rpm's and mandrake rpms (mdk.i586.rpm)?

One last thing: Will the shortcuts on the KDE Menu still work, or will I have to manual add new icons?

Thanks in Advance

Always use RPMs because compiling from the source (especially for OO) requires lots of additional packages.

mdk rpms are specifically designed for mandrake. Some regular rpms usually work , but its generally good to use mdk rpms.

Your shortcuts should still work as long as they dont have something like OO-1.1.3 in them. In that case you would change them to OO-1.1.4

The easiest way is to use MDK pakages through URPMI. If you have not set up URPMI, then do so, and use upgrade package option. Here is the link http://www.urpmi-addmedia.org/index2.php

MDK packages have the dependencies for Mandrake resolved, and therefore should install without problems. Other RPMs amy install, but they may run into dependence problems.

If you install a .tar.gz package, you need the development packages installed first. You are going to compile the binaries on your machine. The tar.gz files are the source.

I have done all of the above, with success. You eill find the MDK rpms may be behind the latest available code. It takes time for Mandrake to build a MDK rpm file.

Which is best is up to you. By far, installing MDK rpms is the path of least resistance.
