upgrading NVIDIA driver...troubles!
Ok I upgraded to the new NVIDIA driver. I then booted into init 3 and changed my XF86Config-4 accordingly. The problem is when I change the driver to nvidia and then type startx I get this error:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initiate the NVIDIA kernel module! (EE) NVIDIA(0): ***Aborting*** (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. The crazy thing is that I upgraded to this driver just fine in Redhat9 on the same computer. If, while root, I type init 5, it loads a screen full of misc. symbols and freezes and I have to do a dirty reboot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
i presume you installed the "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496.pkg2.run" file ?
|
You need the kernel source package first.
|
Yes, I did install the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496.pkg2.run package. I also downloaded and istalled the kernel source package from here:
ftp://ftp.surfnet.nl/pub/os/Linux/di...andrake/RPMS/. Of course now that I look i see that is for the 2.4.22-1mdk kernel. I have the 2.4.22-10mdk kernel. I guess I'll just try and get the kernel source off the CD, through the Software Managment and see if that works. |
|
well, I installed the 2.4.22-10mdk kernel source, but I still get the same error.
|
strange
on my sys' the nvidia driver pkg reports the same error as when there was no kernel source present and then install itself i just say "no, don't try and download a freshly compiled blah blah" and then it kicks in i have no idea why this is so humble apologies |
I have had the same problem a week ago...
The thing was that nvidia module installed correctly but it didn't load at boot. Check if nvidia module is loaded, by typing "lsmod". Mine problem was that so after executing "insmod nvidia", x has no problem to start, showing nvidia driver... After rebooting, i got the same problem, nvidia module wasn`t loaded. I resolved it puting in /etc/modules file to load nvidia module at boot (don't know sure if that was the file i changed, but i think it was...anyway, the task was to load it at boot....). Hope it would help you... |
well, I still haven't found a soltuion to this problem. I've just been using the nv driver for now, but I'd really like to upgrade. If anyone else has any ideas please let me know. thanks.
