Upgrading from Mandrake to Mandriva

Would I need to do a new/fresh install for Mandriva, or could I just upgrade to it from Mandrake 10.1? And if there an easy way to backup your settings and files in Linux - naybe to a seperate partition?

Absolutely!!!!

You can to my knowlege upgrade. And you can back up the settings.

Just when you are at the partitioning stage of the install instead of just creating 1 partition and a swap, create 1 partition at half the size you usually would and make it /, and create a swap, then create the rest as /home.

I'm not entirely sure what this means but I'll try to figure it out.

Thanks a bunch!

yeah i thought i was being unclear.

There is a step where you create partitions.

YOu make one and set its' mountpoint to /. Then you make another one as swap, then you make another one and set it's mountpoint to /home

DON'T _create_ partitions if you are upgrading! That will wipe out your currently existing partitions and setup and is not an upgrade, but a fresh install. Use your current/existing partitions if you are upgrading. Before starting the upgrade, make a list of where your current partitions are mounted and when the partition part of setup comes just mount the same partitions in the same locations. (Install may recognize what was mounted where, but if you have a list you can be sure that everything is where it belongs.
