I finally got around to upgrading my Mandriva system to 2008.1, spring free, and ran into some problems I'd like to mention.
I hit the
&MDK::Common::System::uniq bug so I couldn't finish the installation. I had to hit the reset button to get out. I didn't know about it in advance, so when I noticed the new kernel wasn't listed in the grub menu, I solved it by getting the scriptlet from
rpm -q --scripts kernel-... and executing it. Oh well. It worked.
But I couldn't access the network because
shorewall was installed and turned on. I might have had it installed and disabled previously, but I don't think so. When I saw it mentioned in a log, I removed it. Problem solved. I've maintained my own iptables scripts for years, so I don't want or need shorewall's meddling.
Also, it installed
drakbackup, which has a very annoying Windows-esque popup on the bottom tray. I have my own backup plan that cron runs for me to keep my system backed up to my USB drive, so I don't need any of drakbackup's meddling either.
When I try to run
vmware-config.pl to update my VMWare configuration for the new kernel, it fails with an error message. This probably isn't Mandriva's fault, but I can't use VMWare until I track down a solution. The error:
include/asm/bitops_32.h:9:2: error: #error only <linux/bitops.h> can be included directly.
The last item is the
KDE login screen displays the user icons, which I previously disabled and very much dislike. Previously, I edited a config file to solve this, which can't remember, so I'll have to tracked that one down again.
Otherwise, I haven't detected much difference yet. Those upgrade problems were a little annoying, but quickly dispatched. I hear good things about the release, so I'm looking forward to using it.
