use Mandrake Control Center->software management->updates. choose an update mirror, get the updates. a kernel should be among them if you haven't done this before. to get a matching kernel-source, use the same module (MCC->software management) but go to "install software", instead. type kernel in the search. install the kernel-source from the list that matches your kernel. by default, Mandrake will not offer kernel-source updates, only kernel updates.

There is already the 2.6 Kernel out. You are sure you want only kernel 2.4.28?
My personal recommendation for you is to get the 10.1 Mandrake cds. Backup before installation all the programs you want to keep and are not with mandrake. Then make an fresh installation and when he asks for the partition take over the old one and format only /usr / but NOT /home where all your personal data are. Though you can keep all your personel staff and get quitefast all upgrades on Kernel kde and all the other goodies.

If you are really willing to compile your kernel fresh, got to the www.kernel.org and fetch the kernel source you want. Than go the mandrake manual with the Howtos. There is an execllent desribtion for how to do it. Following that I was able to create my own kernels. Takes time.

Good luck

i really wanted to apdate to 10.0 , but it tells me it cannot read from media cd , 9.2 donesnt have this probleme, my frind installed from these 10.0 cds without problem(the cds are not damaged).

what i want to do is to download the source for my current kernel 2.4.22 and than the 2.4.28 patch from kernel.org, patch the source with this latest patch and compile .
is this correct please??, do i need to install or update any other package for succesful kernel compiling?
