upgrade glibc from 2.4-4 to 2.4-7
 

Hi,
I've mandriva2007.0 linux distribution;

now, I must upgrade glibc library

from glibc-2.4-4 (default)
to glibc-2.4-7

in order to install kdevelop latest version: 3.4.0 (it's a dependency).

Is it possible without upgrade all operating system?
What's the correct procedure?

I've either binary: glibc-2.4-7mdv2007.1.i586.rpm
and source: glibc-2.4.tar.gz

Install the binary with urpmi in terminal window as root:The source tarball is not packaged for use with Mandriva Linux. It may compile and work OK, but it may not. The binary is an .rpm package which has been packaged to install and work correctly with Mandriva Linux and urpmi will resolve any dependencies for you.

As a general rule of thumb, I use the Mandriva .rpm package if available. This avoids any dependency issues, and insures that the software installed on my system is correctly configured for use with Mandriva.

but with urpmi, that is the same thing of the visual install,remove&update window,
I don't have any rpm package called glibc-2.4-7
I must update repository link.

Anyhow, are you sure urpmi install it correctly?
Don't I receive any conflict error?

Then, suppose I've install it correctly;
the old glibc libray remain in my PC?
that is, do programs depending on old glibc library,
use new glibc library?

The GUI Package Manager or CLI urpmi will both resolve any dependencies (so no errors). glibc-2.4-7 is currently the only version I see included with Mandriva 2007.0. All the software included with Mandriva Linux 2007.0 should work OK with this version of glibc.

I just checked and the DVD release includes your version (glibc-2.4-4). I do not know which version came with the four CD Install set. I always do my installations via ftp mirror from the Internet.

Yes you should set up Internet media sources if you have an Internet connection (a fast Internet connection is better). Both the four CD and the DVD Install sets contain a limited subset of the full range of software packaged for use with Mandriva Linux. Further, you can set up the various update and plf repositories for access to software updates and proprietary software for use with Mandriva.

To set up the Internet software media sources, go to Easy URPMI and follow the directions on the WEB page. You will need to know your distribution version (2007), and your system architecture (i586, i64, ppc, x86-64).

So I take it you did not succeed in setting up your Software Media Sources. Did you copy and paste only one add media command at a time, or did you copy and paste the entire set of commands in one operation? Do you have a fast Internet connection or are you using dial up? Did you see any error messages?

If you did the entire set of commands in one operation, and you use a dial up connection then it can take quite some time.

I have a broadband connection here rated at seven-mega-bits-per-second (7mbps), and it took over eight minutes to set up main, main_updates, contrib, contrib_updates, plf_free, and plf_non-free. If your connection is slower, it should take proportionately longer to set up the sources.

I didn't give enough precision about my linux problem.

I'm on Mandriva 2007, and i have a fast internet connection.

I let glibc setup run one night without much success.

I did a "urpmi glibc" !

We can see media connection and after that, nothing else ...
