Is there any difference between the "MandrakeOnline" update service that you pay for, and the "Applications -> System -> Configuration -> Configure your computer -> Software Management thing that seems to be free to use?
Or is the paid service just more convenient than the latter?
I want to know I'm getting all necessary updates for it.
By default the 'Software Management' program only has software sources from the CD(s) you installed from and the online security/bugfixes updates, but it won't upgrade version 1.0 of a program to 2.0. The MandrakeOnline Service lets you check for newer versions of software not just fixes. There's also a free version of MandrakeOnline you could try which is probably fine if you don't have to manage other PCs. I used to update my older Mandrake system by adding some online repositories of RPMs to my sources so I could download newer versions. I'm guessing MandrakeOnline works the same way but probably sets it up for you.
It's not free support it's just a method of updating your packages using mandrake package repositories. Go to the following site http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php for the package repositories and instructions on how to set them up.
