Update 10.0 to 10.1 RC1: disaster

I had time and i could sacrifice the mdk10 installation so i decided to give a try to the 10.1 RC1 using the update feature. The results aren't quite good:
- logging with my old user account kde won't start.
- using root account kde starts but mdk control center doesn't start
- using alt-tab-bcksp the x server is unable to restart, i simply get a blinking cursor
- switching to console with atl-tab-f1 and launching mc gives again just a blinking cursor
- the only way to get mc working is to start linux in failsafe mode
- trying init 3 and than init 5 to restart the graphic server and the login manager has no effect.

i haven't investigated much more, because i'm getting a bit frustrated, and i think i'll try a fresh install formatting the partitions.

i was very skeptical about the update feature of mdk10.1, now i have reasons to believe i was right !

ciao
Enrico

Did you report these problems toe The MDK dev team? If not PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post a bug report on the MDK bugzilla so they can be fixed. Every bug I find I report. This is the only way bugs can even have a chance to get fixed. It is a Release Canadate and not an official release. So yes it will have bugs and I have already reported the 5 I found.

I thought about posting some bugs on mdkdev, but the problem is that the problems i got are very difficolt to reproduce. The mdk 10 installation i had was customized in many way:
- kernel tailored for my hardware and not mdk official
- xf86config modified to add extra option for video card and touchpad
- some apps compiled from source and not installed with mdk packages
- some libs were a mix of 10 official and cooker/devel version

Problems seemed mostly related to a worng configuration of the video server; with a fresh install all of these problems have disappeared.

As a result all my bugs wold have been junked as unreproducible ...

bye

Well if thats the case saying "Update 10.0 to 10.1 RC1: disaster" is not fair to make a post like this is it? You have special circumstances and is not a true picture of Mandrake at all. By your statement your hurting MDK when someone reads your topic they automatically thing that MDK is crap without even trying it.

Well, an update such that from 10 to 10.1 should just simply updates all packages version without major issues even if the user has done some customizations. In my case these customizations shouldn't impact an upgrade:

- custom kernel: mdk10.1 comes with its own new kernel so shouldn't bother
- xf86config: if some options are not recognized than a new working file should be generated
- the apps compiled by me were: amarok 1.02, krusader and some kde themes, nothing crucial ...
- all gtk libs were from a mdk early devel, but all kde libs were from 10 official.

With such situation i might expect some minor issue not the unability to start kde or xserver hanging when restarted. I don't think mdk is crap, i have been using it since a long time; and mdk 10.1 fresh install is working quite good with just some minor issues (default sonds driver is not working perfectly). My complains regards the update process not mdk itself (in this case the title would have been "mdk 10.1 rc1: disaster !")

I know how bugs are managed and if the problem is not easily reproducible, than the bug doesn't exist ...

hope this explain

ciao
Enrico
