unusual update of dbus ....mdv2008

unusual download update of dbus version 1.02-10 was discovered today trying to troubleshoot a broken mplayer.

1) mplayer shows bus error.....so far alsaconf redone, turned off sound server...release kde sound apps when idle with no effect.....my soundcard is in dmesg and lspci and kde info center. Now back to thread

2) so in looking for why I had a bus error...I knew I recently updated a lot of stuff ....my syslog shows that dec 4 when updating kernel and some other stuff....dbus was downloaded.

3) when I went into mcc....and clicked on the dbus entry to see which update site it came from....eg main_updates or non-free blah blah blah.....mcc reported ....medium was NONE

4) In checking my actual site, manually thru a web browser, the site says oct 5

WT?

5) I think dbus is my message bus etc but can anyone explain why mcc has updated it or even thinks it needed updating?

I am currently clueless....do not answer that bit heh heh

In 2008.0 the Software Manager always reports the medium as "none" for installed packages.

There has been no official update for dbus. 1.0.2-10mdv2008.0 is the version in /main and the Oct 5th date is correct.

Presumably, the kernel update (or one of the other packages that you installed) recognized that dbus was required and that you did not have it installed (or had an obsolete version installed) and so installed it. (If you upgraded from a previous version of Mandriva, then this package may not have been updated properly at that time.)

Jim

Mdv 2008 was a clean install.....me thinks dbus supplies message bus and so if I did not have it b4, I should have had an error in running some apps?

So in a small twist from your answer, maybe something had to been downloaded and installed, and then dbus re-installed to recognise the changes?

troublehoot 2 still fail

on new image I kept my old and new kernels....booting either still got bus error.

2) restored old image and /var/log/rpm files for both images had same dbus

old image of course works....it will take me time to download updates to find which one breaks my messagebus.

resolved

did not find the culprit but did install in stages and re-test on second last image, mplayer

FYI
set 1 cpio dosfstools kbd gphoto and its lib vixiecron
set 2 glibc and is dev and util-linix
set3 openssl and its lib
set4 libia ora gnome and libsmbclient
set 5 k 2.6.22.12.1 and its latest variant

reboot and all is good
