Wink Uninstalling PC Linux OS

Hi Everyone I think i made a terrible boo boo installing my distro.
Windows doesn't seem to exist any more and i cant use any of the system admin tools because the OS won't accept any of my passwords.

Any help you could give would be much appreciative PS love to those who helped me on this forum B4.

There's no need to uninstall.

When you startup your system, use the any of the arrow keys to stop the countdown.

With the word Linux selected type single then press enter.

You should end with something like this sh-3.1# when the boot has completed.

Type passwd and press enter.

Now input your new root password and confirm it by typing it in again when requested.

Once that is done type reboot and press enter.

Let the system boot normally, login and use your new root password to access the admin functions.

You can also get back to being able to boot windows -- insert your Windows install CD and boot from the CD-- then chose Recovery Console. Enter your windows password and select the Windows you want to repair --it will usually be on the C/Windows directory.

Then simply type FIXMBR.

This will then re-set the boot sector so you'll boot into Windows staright away not using GRUB.

(If you have VISTA then I'm not sure this will work BTW - but who wants to use VISTA anyway).

Now you can either re-install your Linux system or re-install GRUB and try and repair the linux system with the repair option when you select the install options.

If you think you screwed up the installation ist time round then I'd re-install from scratch again. Apart from anything else it's good practice at installing the OS and a clean installation should remove any rubbish you might have from a previously hosed up system.

Your Windows Partition(s) in theory should be untouched -- use the FIXMBR method shown above if you can't boot into Windows anymore.

Cheers

-K
