Unable to connect to the internet
 

I'm running Mandrake 10 and have a D-Link DSL-504T adsl modem/router which connects via Ethernet.

I have at some stage been able to connect to the internet, however when i did i was not able to visit the vast majority of websites. I could visit a sports website like teamtalk.com but i was unable to visit Yahoo.com or Google.com or any of the big sites. In fact of every single website i tried to connect to, teamtalk.com was the only one that did work. I couldn't even get into this website.

I have tried checking the box "connect on startup" in the modem options in the Mandrake Control Centre, but everytime i go back the box is unchecked again.

I have tried clicking "connect" in the Manage Connections and it says "connecting....." along the bottom or something to that effect. Then it says its connected and promptly disconnects again straight away.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON! I thought Ethernet connected modems liked Linux.

I'm having the same exact problem. Works fine on my home computer but doesn't work on my laptop. I can access this website but can't access google.com or other big sites. I can't log into GAIM either.

No idea what it is. Hopefully someone can help. =)

I was hoping it would be plain sailing as i have a ethernet connected modem which is branded and popular. Not so :(

Try adding this line to /etc/modprobe.conf:

alias net-pf-10 off

kilgoretrout could you put a bit more detail into that advice because i'm quite new to Linux and i'm not entirely sure how i might try that. Or if there's a tutorial which would point me in the right direction it would help a lot.

OK. You just need to edit /etc/modprobe.conf. You need to be root to do so. Open a console and run:

$ kdesu kwrite /etc/modprobe.conf

Enter your root password when prompted and kwrite will come up with root privileges with modprobe.conf displayed. Add these lines at the end of modprobe.conf:

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

save the changes and reboot. This edit will disable ipv6 which is the new internet addressing protocol capable of giving an ip address for evey atom on the earth. It's being slowly adopted because we are running out of ip addresses under the old standard(ipv4) or at least that's the concern. No one is really using it as of yet on the internet and it's been known to cause problems with DNS resolution like your experiencing, especially when using the 2.6 kernels. Disabling ipv6 cures the problem. You may have something else going on but this is the first thing I'd try as it's a common problem.

Thank you kilgoretrout i hope this solves the problems. I will try it a.s.a.p. and report back to see if it worked.

It fixed my problem with not being able to access most websites. =)

But I still cannot connect to GAim or any messanger program. *shrug*

Have you tried to go to the Mandrake CC center and reconfigure your internet connection?


Are the settings OK?

I have indeed had a look in the Mandrake Control Centre and i think i've had a look at just about all the settings.

Could you please be specific about which settings i need to look at in particular and how to do it?

OK there are a lots of things that I cannot see on your PC and computers are set up differently. For example, this computer I am typing on has two ethernet cards, one is integrated with the motherboard and the other is not, if you go to hardware in Mandrake CC center look to see it the card is installed and configured properly.

You can also go to Internet Connections and try to reinstall Internet Connection. You may want to contact your internet provider to see how they install their internet connection. I happen to use SBC Yahoo.

Let us know what you find out. It should be really easy to do.

You may have to install plugins for kopete and/or gaim.

Which plugins would these be? I checked the GAim site and the package install list for GAim plugins but couldn't find anything that had to do with connecting to GAim.

Go yo your mandrake control center under install packages, go to install and type in the ward Gaim and see it it pulls up any package plug-ins.

Gaim was really easy to install for me.

Also let us know what you did to get your internet to work, so someone else might be able to learn from what you did.

Yeah, I checked under there and also the website but couldn't find any plugins that have to do with connectiong to GAim.

To fix my internet problem I did what was posted in this thread:

Fixed everything for me besides connecting to GAim.:)

Attempt to uninstall and reinstall "Gaim" all over again. If I recall it also asked to install some dependency packages as well. I also assume you tried to open with Konsole?

I also assumed you installed the RPM version of it?

I had a problem with Kopete a while ago but I avoided installing any updates on the new packages part when reinstalling Mandrake and re-running the script.

Ok I have lots of problems and no clear reason why. I’ll try to explain clearly and keep it simple if I can.

Internet DOES NOT connect on boot, despite being correctly configured in MCC on the Ethernet card section. I am sure all the settings are correct and I do get the following message to confirm everything has gone well upon startup:

Bringing up interface eth0
Checking internet connection to start at boot…..etc etc…………………..OK

I have tried clicking Connect button in the Manage Connections in MCC (not that I want to have to do this each time I want to get online) but it disconnects again the very second it’s shown as connected.

The only way I can actually get a connection to the internet (in Mandrake 10) at the moment is by running the Run Config Tool and configuring the Ethernet card (nvidia integrated) to ADSL each time.

When I am actually online, I cannot access 99% of sites. The default Mandrake links all work, and I found a site called www.teamtalk.com that works as well. But all the major sites such as yahoo.com or google.com do not. What makes some different? I usually get “connection to server failed…..blah blah port 80” or something like “timeout on server”.

I have followed kilgoretrout’s advice and added the following to the modprobe.conf so it’s not an ipv6 related problem:

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

So to summarise I would like my internet connection to start on boot and stay that way, and I would like to surf as I please, not just 5 or so sites. I’m using the Konquerer browser and I can’t even get on linuxquestions.org in Linux :(

I am gonna guess you are having some issue with your router, is it configured properly and is it compatible with Linux? Also make sure you select LAN settings when configuring your Internet connection.

Also, you can call your Internet provider or D-Link themselves and they might be able to help you configure your router by phone. If you saved your router instruction manual, you might be able to do this yourself.

I know my modem is configured properly because i configured it in Windows XP when i bought it recently. All the actual modem settings were configured according to the manual so there should be no problems there. Is it compatible with Linux? I don't know for sure but it is a branded popular ethernet connected modem so it should be. It's a D-Link DSL-504T ADSL Modem/Router with built in firewall. I'd blame the firewall for the problems but it's not as i can get any site i want in the world on my Windows XP partition.

Make sure i configure my Ethernet card to LAN settings in MCC you say? Ok that's fine but i've actually tried configuring it on LAN, and ADSL, and Modem and they all have the desired effect of connecting me to the internet....until next bootup when i have to repeat the annoying process. I'm sure it's a software related problem and not a hardware one as i can actually get online and get one or two random webpages, it's just 99% of the other ones that i can't get. I am going to try emailing D-Link technical to see if they have any ideas.

I have now made some small progress...

I went into Remove Connections in MCC and removed all of the connections. Then into MCC and Harddrake and configured the Ethernet card using Run Config Tool on the LAN option. The internet is now connected on bootup and stays that way :)

Presumably i had unwittingly made multiple connections on various methods and this was causing a conflict. I do get this message in verbose mode on bootup but i don't really care is the internet now starts on bootup:

Bringing up interface eth0.......................................OK
No connection to start

So that is one less problem on my list. BUT and this is a big but, i still cannot get 90% of the websites on the internet. Most of the websites (including major sites such as yahoo.com and google.com) cause the following error message to appear in the Konqueror browser:

An error occurred while loading www.example.com

Timeout on server
Connection was to example.com at port 80

Have you made any attempts to contact your internet provider?

Does your router assign an automatic IP address? also try contacting D-Link, you need to make absolutely sure youre router is configured correctly.

I use a "Linksy" ethernet card on both of my PC's and the box said it was compatable with both windows and Linux.

I would agree, it sounds like some sort of configuration issue or driver issue.

Don't give up.

If you have a spare ethernet card, try that and make sure you do not have an intergrated ethernet card.

Believe it or not, and I know it sounds stupid, but check your cables and your lights on your router and make sure they are properly connected.

Let us know what you find out. Again, this should really be a simple procedure to solve.

More small steps...

I have indeed contacted my ISP and they referred me to the manual for the modem, which wasn't much use really as the manual has no reference to linux systems in it. I have emailed D-Link and am awaiting a reply to my query.

Now when we talk about this problem i have with this modem/router, you have to consider that this unit is working flawlessly on my Windows XP Pro system. So that should rule out any loose cabling, faulty hardware or incorrect modem/router settings. I do have an nForce Ultra 400 chipset and the modem/router is connected via the Nvidia integrated ethernet port. If that makes any difference?

However i am making progress. The internet connection now starts on bootup. And thanks to the re-configured settings in MCC i can now access almost all websites i want. However, when i try to visit any websites related to yahoo or google (and some others) i am still getting the following message:

An error occurred while loading www.example.com

Timeout on server
Connection was to example.com at port 80

I just don't understand why such a major website is not working in Linux. Especially one provides it's Yahoo Messenger program for Linux systems (which i have also installed and cannot figure out how to run, but that's a story for another day). Ironically, i tried www.msn.com and that actually does load fine.

I suspect that is probably your problem. If you can afford ($15.99-$30.00) a real ethernet card (I recommend a Linksy) I bet your problem will be resolved. It's all about the drivers, as some hardware is not compatable with Linux.

I have a mic that works with Mandrake, but windows XP cannot detect it or handle it. Go figure.

Before i go and spend £12 (inc. delivery at ebuyer) on a new PCI Ethernet Card i would like to make absolutely sure that this is in fact the problem here. For a start, why do nearly all websites work except yahoo.com and google.com? And exactly how supported is an integrated ethernet card by someone like Nvidia in linux? I was under the impression that Nvidia and Linux products worked very well together.

Does anyone else have an idea where i can get the latest Nvidia drivers for Linux just in case this is the problem. I presume it would be classed as the chipset drivers?

I have now downloaded the new linux drivers from the nvidia website. I'm going to update them if there is a need. Do i have to uninstall the old ones first, or can i just install them all over the top? It'll be all the chipset drivers that i'm reinstalling i guess.
