ttf fonts not picked up

I've installed the Win ttf fonts on Mandriva 2006 but none of the apps, with the exception of Open Office, see them.
The font installer gave no destination, but I found them in /usr/local/share/fonts which is listed under catalogue in "config". So they are in the path.
Where do I go next?

Mandriva has a font install program in the Mandrake Control Centre that will put the fonts in the right location for you. http://doc.mandrivalinux.com/Mandrak.../drakfont.html

Try doing "#mkfontdir && mkfontscale" in the directory where the fonts were installed. After that log out and in again, hopefully all apps will be able to see the new fonts.
