Trying to install Mandrake 10 for 1st time


Hey guys,

Trying to install Mandrake 10 on a laptop

MITAC

P266MMX

64 ram

6 gig drive

no other Operating systems are on it

i go though and when i get to packages i choose the packages i want through basic and then i go next and it goes

error " no base system selected."

I belive they are talking about the desktop enviroment like KDE, Gnome, etc. I'm not sure about this it is just something to try.

yer tired that i actually dd a test and choose advanced to allow u to custom select the packages and i used all of them just to test and still got the error

how are you formatting the drive? did you use diskdrake during the install & format it properly for a Linux install? i'm not 100% sure, but i think the error has to do with an improperly formatted drive/partition(s).

yer i used the standard diskdruad to format it into linux partitions

boot system and home

what do you mean by "system"? did you make a /root partition? you need a root partition in order to install. i never heard of /system. it's a matter of preference, but i always go with /boot /root /usr /home. oh, did you also create a /swap partition? you need a /swap to.

The partion that has the system needs to be called just

/

so you should have partions

/boot / /home

so that the install knows where to put stuff.

you can just have

/ /home

or even just

/

or more, but must have the / :-)

ya, you're correct amosf. technically, it's just /, not /root. i just have a habit of typing it out as /root so people that might not know any better will know i mean a root partition. i guess i should type it out both ways when i use examples. gotta learn to remember that. thanks for the correction.
