Trying to install ATI drivers, not sure what version Xwindows I have

When I try to run the check.sh script from su mode I get:

Your possibly not running this script from the console
or maybe you simply dont have the console ownership.
Unable to determine XFree86 Version. Stopping now.

Any way around this?

The problem is that Mandrake 10.1's x.org version does NOT work with the ATI drivers greater than 3.14. So, if you're trying to install the new ATI drivers, it will not work in Mandrake 10.1 unless you upgrade your X.org to version 8.6.2.
