Question Trouble installing 2005 LE

I'm an occasional user of Linux (I.e. played around with Red Hat, Suse, and Mandrake over the past few years), but still very novice when it comes to configuring / setup. I used to run Mandrake 10.0 but it became corrupt, so I wiped my drive clean and installed Mandriva 2005. I tried downloading the ISO images, but it never finished an install. I tried the mini with some success...

When I boot up it gives me a login prompt (gui), but after doing this I only get Xclock. KDE won't load up, and I'm not sure why. I think it could be the video card drivers. I can however, switch over to command prompt and can login from there as well.

I've tried using the install disk to change the video drivers to all the Radeon drivers (my video card is an ATI radeon 9200SE). When I look up the product number on line though I see it could be made by Diamond...kind of confusing. Anyways, I also tried to create a X86config file via the prompt command, but there was no luck...I used pretty specific details for each device per the online data sheets (I.e. monitor, card, etc.)

There was a link I saw about ATI cards, but it looked quite confusing. Anyone know of a step by step for dummies type explanation, or a better way to troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks to all of you who respond.

Hi,

I think that the mini CD did not install KDE.

You have 2 options:

1 - Install all kde packages by hand

You may want to configure your urpmi repositories. If you don't know how to do this you can try googling "easy urpmi" and if you can't get it working post again here.

After you have urpmi set up you should go to the official KDE website and download the rpm packages for Mandrake. They are located at http://www.kde.org/download/

Read this post to learn how to install kde: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=347652

or

2 - Download the 3 ISO Images and install the full system with KDE

By the way, I don't recomend compiling stuff from source. This will prevent the rpm dependency checker (and thus urpmi) from working at it's best. I recomend installing the rpm packages.

I usually just compile the kernel for a faster system.
