tmp full- KDE won't start

Just received error message - .tmp out of room - KDE cannot start. Does this mean tmp under root or tmp in my home folder?

And what can I do ?

It should be /tmp folder not ~/tmp. KDE creates some cache folders which keep track of file changes, locks and various other things. Try deleting some files to see if that helps

I'm sure Mandriva has an option to automatic clean the tmp directories.

First of all go to your /tmp directory as a *normal user* (not root) and erase all your user files, except directories:

rm -f *

See if you have gotten enough space. For now it's enough to free the space to enable rpm to install software.

There is an application called tmpwatch which will automate the process of getting rid of stale tmp files and unneeded stuff.
The best way to install it is opening Mandriva's Control Center going to the software manager and install it from there.

In case of doubt here is the latest version for Mandriva 2006:
tmpwatch-2.9.4-1mdk.i586.rpm

You can open the link directly, Mandriva will use it's URPMI package manager to install it, the only thing you need to do is enter your root password when asked and follow the instructions of the program if any.

By default this cleans your /tmp and /var/tmp files, but I can't stat where the config file is.
