"Glxgears are now running very smoothly (over approximately 4090 fps)"
sc0undrel -- you should realize that the Linux "radeon" driver is partially accelerated.
This is the driver that Mandriva 2006 will install automatically.
Glxgears runs "very smoothly" with the default "radeon" driver from Tungsten Graphics, Inc., running at 4550 frames in 5.0 seconds = 909.967 FPS, on my box and with a Radeon 9250 AGP card.
The ATI driver itself (if you can get it to work) will run glxgears at about 1230 FPS.
Also, I have posted a thread on writing to Windows 2000/XP (formatted with the NTFS) from Linux using the program Captive or the ntfs kernel module.
If you know how to get the ntfs kernel module working, would you drop in to the thread:
I installed the ATI drivers on a 64-bit box running SuSE 10.0. They worked.
The same driver version (8.21.7) did NOT work for 32-bit SuSE 10.0 (probably because the card uses an AGP slot (see the comment below)).
All you do is run the script
# ./ati-driver-installer-8.21.7-x86_64.run
and click OK a couple of times, then run the command
# aticonfig --initial
If this isn't the right command for your setup enter # aticonfig -h to get the help page.
That's it. That's all there is to it.
It works because the XPRESS 200 does not use an AGP slot -- otherwise it probably will not work, as the agpart kernel module does not compile. I have yet to see it compile on any machine for any of the ATI drivers after 8.14.13.
In case you are interested. Here are some of the specs:
# fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON XPRESS 200 Series SW TCL Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5582 (8.21.7)
# glxgears
5768 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1153.600 FPS
6161 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1232.200 FPS
6160 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1232.000 FPS
6164 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1232.800 FPS
6163 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1232.600 FPS
# fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
915 frames in 5.0 seconds = 183.000 FPS
920 frames in 5.0 seconds = 184.000 FPS
925 frames in 5.0 seconds = 185.000 FPS
920 frames in 5.0 seconds = 184.000 FPS
923 frames in 5.0 seconds = 184.600 FPS

If you look at the many errors produced by the compilation of the agpart kernel module (I have looked for a range of hardware configurations) you have to believe that the compilation has been deliberately crippled.
ATI should fire the code writers -- that is, of course, if it hasn't been crippled on instructions from the management.
By the way,... default installations of Mandriva 2006 and SuSE 10 use an accelerated driver from Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
Hi there sc0undrel, I've been having the exact same problem you had when trying the following lines:
[root@your-box]# cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
[root@your-box]#sh make.sh
[root@your-box]#cd ..
[root@your-box]#sh make_install.sh
Also having no joy running fglrxconfig - like you it seems to say it doesn't exist
Now you say you "tried to apply the Vesa driver module, then reapplied the Xorg radeon module, restarted X and tried to do every command again and IT WORKED" can you give more detail on what you done? I'm new to linux myself. Did you use the Mandriva control centre to apply a standard vesa driver instead of the ATI one, apply it, change back to the Radeon driver in the MCC then instal the downloaded driver?
Been struggling with this for a while so any help would be appreciated =)
