I upgraded to Mandriva 2006 from LE 2005. In LE 2005 the user login screen used to have nice graphics, it also offered options for login/reboot/halt. In Mandriva 2006 the user login screen looks like cr%p, with shi%&^ty fonts, and no options of any kind. Does anyone know if it is possible to modify it or is it another one of those server functionality "enhancements?" It's a stupid little annoyance, but it makes me want to to downgrade back to LE 2005 or move to Ubuntu altogether.
Originally posted by tolstyi hmm, no warning messages came up during upgrade, and everything else seems normal.
You don't necessarily see error messages if things go wrong after an upgrade. In this instance I think you need to uninstall mdkkdm, kdm (or gdm) and reinstall kdm (or gdm) from the Mandriva 2006 discs or urpmi mirrors.
Originally posted by tolstyi thanks for trying to help. Isn't uninstalling mdkkdm going to break the system? I can't try it at the moment, will do so later on tonight.
No, it won't break it since your system doesn't really need a login manager to work. I don't think mdkkdm its even available in Mandriva 2006. Just make sure that when you uninstall mdkkdm, you install kdm or gdm afterwards so that you have a working login manager when you reboot.
reddazz, thanks a ton for your pointers, it worked rather well. After installing kdm I realized the reason I had a crappy looking login manager window was because it was run by XDM only. Now I have all the options and a better looking login window. Thanks!
Glad to hear it's fixed. I was going to note that you don't need to uninstall mdkkdm, but only to run "configure your system", system options (I think) and change the display manager from the one you don't like to maybe the KDE display manager. Besides the ones already mentioned, there's a Gnome display manager too.
