I installed UT2003 and disabled a system sound to get normal sound in game. Now when i try to enable it again it doesn't work.I have normal sound in XMMS and other players, everything seems to be ok,but system notifications aren't work. When i press "Check sound" it works fine, and everything works when i log in as root, but not for user. Need to fix it...
i'm assuming you're using KDE. if so, check the following...........
kontrol center->look n feel->system notifications. make sure you start up/shut down sounds are selected & the "play a sound" box is checked nest to them. or, you can just use the turn on all sounds fearures if you want all system sounds enabled. apply when done.
if that isn't the case, the in kontrol center, go to sound->sound system. under the "general" tab make sure "enable the sound system" is checked. under the "hardware" tab make sure you have the correct audio device selected, or try "auto". make sure "full duplex mode" is unchecked. apply when done.
and, a final place to look is Mandrake Control Center->system->services & make sure alsa & sound is checked to start on boot & running.
what exactly did you disable to play the game? also, another to check ir run userdrake from terminal as root & see if user is set for the sound group. if not, add it, then try sounds.

I disabled a system sound in Configure your desktop>Sound>Sound system, unchecked an "Enable the sound system" option. Now i am trying to enable it and it's does not work. I did what you say, checked if i am a member of sound group, and there was no sound group so i created one and added myself to.No results.Again, when i running apps as root it works fine. It makes me crazy,i don't really need these sounds but it's something going wrong in my system and i don't love it.
pongmaster,you are right...here how i did it:
There are two files in ~/.kde/share/config directory: knotify.eventsrc and knotifyrc. When i looked what is inside them, there was no full path to sound files (e.g /usr/share/sounds...),but just names of sounds, like KDE_Critical_Error.wav.I just deleted them both, opened Configure your desktop>LookNFeel>System Notifications and configured events one by one. There is an option in this dialog to show KDE the full path to sounds. I used this option, restarted X and voila! it works. Since i am completely newbie in Linux i can't understand how disabling a sound system can modify things like this, but that's what it was.
Sorry for my english...if someone need more detailed info i always ready to help.
