Unhappy System.map keeps disappearing

I compiled kernel 2.4.22-26mdk, copied System.map from /usr/src/linux to /boot/System.map-2.4.22-26mdk then made a link file, System.map, to it.
After reboot, System.map-2.4.22-26mdk disappeared. I don't know why. Whenever I reoobt my system with System.map linked to System.map-2.4.22-26mdk it disappear.
Dose anybody have an idea why ?

Is it possible that you didn't mount your boot partition (if it's on a separate partition) before copying over the System.map? Most distros don't mount /boot at boot time so the data won't get damaged.
