Using Mandrake 10.0 with KDE 3.2

Ok so a few days ago I had the install program portion of the Mandrake Control Center open for an extended period of time. I'm not sure what I did but not my rpm database is in exclusive mode. Add that to the fact that the Configre Your Hardware portion of the start menu has disappeared! If I click on an rpm file a dialog box pops up asking me what application I would like to use. Now I can install rpm files in the console as root. I tried to upgrade via my mandrake cds but the configure your hardware icon is still gone. If I have to I will just reinstall everything; but I've had my fill of that with windows so I'm hoping I can solve this problem.

sounds almost like you somehow lost rpmdrake. that's the front end to urpmi that Mandrake uses to install packages (rpm's). open a terminal, su to root, & type........... urpmi rpmdrake (hit enter). see if it installs it. it's on one of the cd's. if not, please post back with any more info or errors you recieved.

Everything installed ok but how do I get the icon on the start menu back? If I type rpmdrake at the command line it comes up, but I want to be able to configure hardware also.

ok, i'm a wee bit confused. from your initial post, you sounded like you were unable to install software. can you infact install rpm's? if so, & you just want the menu shortcut back, right click the Kicker yellow star (or "K"........whatever yours looks like) choose menu editor. in the left panel, navigate to the location on the menu tree where you want the shortcut. click add item button. name it what you like, choose an icon, & for the command type either of these............. mcc .........or ........... /usr/sbin/drakconf. either will accomplish the desired effect. when you're done, click the "save" button. exit the menu editor. you may have to restart KDE.

for future note, you can also run that app via command line as root by typing......... mcc (hit enter), should you ever lose the shortcut again.

The icon in the start menu for the Mandrake Control Center is gone. System--->Configuratiion---> Configure Your Hardware. I do have 'Configure Your Desktop' but not 'Configure Your Hardware'. I can install programs just as before, my problem is that the Mandrake Control Center is gone. I tried mcc as root in a console, command not found. I was just trying to explain what I was doing last time; as a pretext to the problem I'm having now. Once the MCC problem started, that is when my rpm database went into exclusive mode. I figured I would mention it to provide more information.

ok............ in terminal as root try running the following (either will (should) bring up MCC)..........

/usr/sbin/drakconf

or just........

drakconf

if you still get command not found, then that leads me back to you somehow uninstalled drakconf. if that's the case, in terminal as root, do........... urpmi drakconf . if it starts installing drakconf (& any dependencies), let it do so, then you'll be good to go. if it says "everything installed", then the only other thing i can think of right now is the rpm data got fubar'd & is locked, in which case a reboot might cure it.
